Whitmarsh: We had the quickest car

Martin Whitmarsh is singing the praises of Lewis Hamilton after he "drove superbly" and "made no mistakes" to take the Hungarian GP win.

Leading from start to finish, Hamilton managed to stay just in front of first Romain Grosjean and then Kimi Raikkonen.

The McLaren driver did not put a wheel wrong despite the intense pressure and running his last set of Pirelli tyres for just short of 30 laps.

"Lewis drove a great race," Whitmarsh told Sky Sports F1.

"Obviously looking after the tyres was tough and he just drove superbly, made no mistakes, looked after the tyres and was more confident than we were for most of that race.

"I think we had the quickest car.

"Looking after the tyres was difficult for both drivers, so maybe we need to look a little bit at tyre durability, but, it was quick enough to cross the line first and that is quick enough for me today."

While Hamilton brought in 25 points on Sunday, Button added eight to put McLaren up to second in the Constructors' standings ahead of Lotus and Ferrari.

"We needed to get points in the bag," Whitmarsh said. "We are hauling ourselves up in the Constructors' Championship, and Lewis has cruised up behind that second echelon of drivers in the Championship.

"We said before this race that there are 430 points available in the rest of the Championship. We didn't get as many as we wanted this weekend but we have a decent haul.

"If we can do it week in week out there is no reason we can't be in Brazil at the end of the year fighting for both Championships."
