'Ferrari must return to winning ways'

Luca di Montezemolo admits this season is a "very important" one for Ferrari as they look to return to the top step of the podium.

Ferrari, who hold the record for most Constructors', 16, and most Drivers' crowns, 15, have not won either title since claiming the teams' trophy back in 2008.

Instead, the Italian stable has found themselves finishing behind the likes of McLaren, Brawn and more recently Red Bull Racing.

The latter dominated last year's Championship, and with McLaren coming second, Ferrari were left to pick up the scraps.

It was a disappointing campaign for a team used to winning as they clinched just one race victory and never looked to be in contention for the titles.

This resulted in several changes, the most notable being the axing of technical director Aldo Costa who was replaced by former McLaren man Pat Fry.

Now Ferrari are hoping that the changes coupled with a more aggressive car will see them back at the front of the pack.

Speaking during the online unveiling of Ferrari's boxer nose F2012, di Montezemolo said: "We have a very important season in front of us, a season in which Ferrari want to start winning again.

"We want to get back into a position to not lose the World Championship on the final race of the season as happened two seasons ago and which is still something that haunts us.

"Ferrari want to get back to winning ways and we have everything in place to do that."

Instead, the Italian outfit took the usual - by their standards - option of unveiling the new car online.

Di Montezemolo, though, reckons it could be a great omen for things to come.

"It's a slightly unusual unveiling due to the snow, but I hope it brings us luck.

"[Enzo] Ferrari told me that so much snow fell on the day he was born that his mother wasn't able to register his birth at the Municipality. I therefore hope that snow continues to bring us luck."

As for his drivers, the Italian firmly believes that in Fernando Alonso he has a winning driver while Felipe Massa, granted a one-year extension on his Ferrari deal, has the ability to turn his fortunes around.

"Fernando had an extraordinary season. He's convinced he can repeat the performance and we want to give him an even more competitive car this time.

"As for Felipe, he knows just how much he needs to bounce back from a disappointing season. He has what it takes to do it and I'm convinced that he will go back to being the Massa we all know he is.

"Some of the characteristics of the car and the new tyres suit his driving style. We are putting him in a position to do well."
