Rosberg: Fastest car out there

Rosberg: Fastest car out there

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes had the "fastest" car in Monaco on Sunday but given that he lost out to Mark Webber off the line he couldn't take the win.

Starting P2 after his team-mate Michael Schumacher's penalty elevated him up the grid, Rosberg had a good start and was quickly off the line.

But so too was Webber.

And, given the nature of the Monte Carlo street circuit, that meant the German sat on Webber's rear wing for the bulk of the 78 laps, only having one lap worth of breathing room when he pitted ahead of the Red Bull driver.

But, with Webber pitting a lap later, Rosberg was again staring at the back of the Aussie's car with the gap roughly 1.5s.

The German did get extremly close in the final few laps as Webber became tentative as a few spots of rain fell.

That, though, was how they finished the grand prix with Rosberg lamenting that his car was quicker but that there was nothing he could do about it.

"I got a good start, but so did Mark," said the Mercedes driver, who lost by 0.643s.

"It was a matter of tyre management. I was a bit surprised how strong we were in qualifying and in the race.

"We probably had the fastest car out there. We are making progress all the time.

"Unfortunately it didn't come together perfectly - first would have been nice - but we are pleased with second place."
