'Hard times build character'Thursday 2nd July 2009Lewis Hamilton remains philosophical about his tough 2009 season, insisting he has learnt a lot from his struggles.
The defending World Champion has endured a poor season both on and off the track, with his MP-24 failing to keep up with the pace at the front of the field and Hamilton becoming embroiled in the 'liargate' saga.
"Hard times help to build your character," Hamilton told Sport Bild.
"In the last few months I've grown up a lot because I learned how to deal with setbacks.
"In that way this year has probably helped me in a personal sense more than any other before it."
Reflecting on 'liargate' Hamilton admits he would act differently if faced with the situation now.
"I would take a step back and listen to my instincts. The doubts I had, about whether I should be lying, I would take much more seriously," he said.
With just nine points from the first eight races, Hamilton is realistic about McLaren's chances of ending the season on a high, and instead is focusing on launching a competitive 2010 campaign.
"It doesn't really interest us anymore where we are at the end of the championship. We have to do everything we can now to make sure we have the best car in the field next year," said Hamilton. ©2009 - 365 Media Group Any reproduction, publication or redistribution of this material without the written agreement of 365 Media Group is strictly forbidden. |
