Symonds: Renault can take Toyota

Friday 29th August 2008

Pat Symonds is confident Renault can beat Toyota to fourth place in this year's Constructors' Championship but concedes it won't be easy.

Although Renault are currently right behind Toyota on the teams' table, the points difference between the leading midfield outfits is ten.

But with six races remaining on this year's calendar there is still plenty of time for Renault to edge ahead of their rivals.

"Toyota are a team that have been up and down really throughout their history - perhaps less so this year than previously," he told the Renault podcast.

"We know that when it comes to the high downforce tracks they are very, very good and Hungary was an example of that.

"Valencia they seemed to be struggling at the beginning and on Friday both drivers seemed to be pretty unhappy with their cars, but they got the things to a good result on Sunday.

"We never underestimate anyone, we know all our competitors need to be treated with respect and we need to fight hard with them.

"I do believe that we can beat Toyota, I do believe that we fundamentally have a better car than them and we are a better team than them, but it's not going to be easy."
