'Turkish organisers could face sanctions'

Tuesday 13th May 2008

The FIA is set to investigate the Istanbul circuit's security after two stray dogs got onto the track during Sunday's GP2 race.

Disaster struck midway through the race, which took place prior a few hours ahead of the F1 Turkish GP, when two dogs were seen running on the track.

One, unfortunately, was hit by the car of Bruno Senna, killing the dog on impact and putting the Brazilian out of the race due to suspension damage.

The incident has already been condemned by the likes of Mark Webber, with the FIA now revealing that the Turkish GP organisers could face sanctions.

"This was a serious lapse in circuit security and safety," a FIA spokesman told Reuters. "How could such a thing happen at an almost brand new Formula One track?

"The FIA Safety Commission will hold a full investigation into the matter which may then be referred to the World Council."

Asked about the possible consequences for the circuit, the spokesman said: "Sanctions cannot be ruled out at this stage."

The Istanbul Otodrom made its F1 debut in 2005.
