Sir Jackie: Just sign already!

Tuesday 3rd November 2009

Sir Jackie Stewart believes Jenson Button and Brawn GP should resolve their financial issues and sign a new contract.

Despite winning this year's Driver's Championship title for Brawn GP, Button and his team have failed to reach agreement on his potential 2010 salary should he stay.

While the Brit is believed to be wanting the £8m he had been earning with Honda before taking a pay-cut to help new owner, Ross Brawn, the team are reportedly looking at a lower figure.

Sir Jackie, though, has urged them to hurry up and sort out the issue as it's not like Button is asking for Kimi Raikkonen's £25m salary demands. But then again, nor is he going to be strapped for cash any time soon.

"Jenson and Brawn need to come to an agreement," Sir Jackie told the Mirror.

"He is not asking for money on the scale of Kimi or Alonso. But money is not going to be Jenson's problem in the future.

"He's going to make big money for quite a few years. The odd two or three million is neither here nor there."

"Button didn't have a drive unless he took that pay cut, it has nothing to do with his worth now. Maybe Rosberg took a big bite out of the salary budget. Mercedes won't care if Button is there. What leaverage does he have? Raikkonen's payout by Ferrari has nothing to do with what the next team should pay for his services. Raikkonen is not a pay driver, he doesn't use his money to get a ride. Raikkonen is "the" uncontracted driver. "

"Kimi has made more than 50 million euros for being a 'lucky' champion. So why can't a guy who dominated the championship in 2009 get 8M? Jenson is a better driver than Kimi. That's a fact!"

"Jense took the pay-cut to have a drive...however, Brawn needs to reward him for producing....it is a two-way street. J. Stewart is one experianced person they should listen to, he has done a lot for F1."

"Simonc, perhaps you should check your own prose."
