After nine years in Formula One, Kimi Raikkonen faces an uncertain future as the former World Champion has yet to put pen to paper on a deal for next season.
Having opted to leave Ferrari a year early, Raikkonen said farewell to the Scuderia at last weekend's season finale in Abu Dhabi. However, it remains to be seen whether it was also his goodbye to Formula One.
The 30-year-old, who turned down an offer from Toyota prior to the team's withdrawal from the sport, has on numerous occasions stated that he will only race for a team capable of winning the World title. More to the point, he'll only race for McLaren.
And although he had been talking with the Woking team, reports claim the negotiations broke down due to Raikkonen's salary demands.
Despite the reports, though, the 2007 World Champion it not at all anxious about his future.
"It's hard to believe that I have been in Formula One for nine years already," Raikkonen told his official website.
"I am very motivated to win races and a Championship again and will only remain in F1 if I can race for a team that can give me a car to fight at the front.
"Let's wait and see what happens."
And although Raikkonen has already stated that rallying or even a year on the sidelines are options, the Finn would like to tackle Formula One's new 2010 regulations, which include a ban on refueling.
"Everybody can focus on next year like Ferrari have done already many weeks," he said. "Is it going to be different? At least there are not so many changes next year.
"No refueling and smaller front tyres are the main things. At the start of the race the cars will feel very difficult to drive with so much fuel on board, so preserving the tyres will play a part.
"Qualifying is now old days where we do not use fuel so that will be more fun."

"Some good comments on this thread. It seems that the value of Kimi is disputed, and that depends on how the commentators see the economic downturn, and the importance of the interaction between car, driver, and circuit.
Who knows what process is working here, but if Kimi is genuine in his indifference to getting a deal signed, then he is playing a psychological game that he will not win. He should leave the late braking on the track. Kimi is making the mistake of thinking that the sponsors watch the racing. They don't Kimi. They look to see how much exposure their brand can get, and the quality of that exposure, and how that translates into market share and profit. Kimi is well known for not bothering with corporate issues. I can't blame him. I mean, who wants to bother with that when you're an F1 driver. But those drivers who take a professional approach to corporate needs, are going to be more marketable, and therefore will carry a higher value. It might not be glamorous, but it is what it is. And Kimi's value as a result is nowhere near the $15m mark. It is around $5m. If he wants more money he needs to re-brand himself and look more to external opportunities. As it stands, $5 million in an amazing quality car and with an excellent team is a deal. I would think that if he wanted to be WDC next year, he would already be sitting in the cockpit getting the parts ordered. "

"mrkjf, I totally agree about Murray, he was always making daft comments, but you always got a laugh with him, but his enthusiasm and love of the sport kept his commentary entertaining!, although i don't agree that Kimi is over-rated(but he is certainly not "the best" in F1, in my opinion there is too many talented drivers in the sport now for any one driver to have that title!), but like most of them, i think he is well over-paid!, and i hope that given that "budget cuts" is the new buzz word in F1, he accepts the fact that he is not worth the money he expects!"

"Not at all biso,i just thought of how much Murray is missed with his daft comments and bad luck(in the nicest way of course)could do with a joke myself and at the same time wondered how many remembered the interview in the first place. But anyway i still stand by what i said Kimi isnt a great driver and hes over rated. If he was the best as some on here have said why hasnt he got the contract signed the money he wants.Cant remember Schumacher having any problem."
