Kubica: It's down to merit and not luck

Friday 18th July 2008

Robert Kubica is confident that BMW hold second place in the standings based on merit and not other teams' misfortune.

At the halfway point of the season BMW are second in the Constructors' Championship, just 14 points behind Ferrari, while Kubica himself is in the running for the Drivers' title.

Thanks to his maiden victory in Canada and an additional three podium finishes, the Polish driver is fourth in the standings, just two points behind a three-way tie for the victory.

"Two points (behind) after nine races, I was not expecting to be so close," he told Autosport.

"But after what has happened to more or less every driver and every team in these first nine races, I think we are not there by mistake, not because we are lucky, but because we did a good job with the team and the whole package works very well, I would say. And this is the reason."

And despite now being in the latter half of the Championship, Kubica reckons BMW will continue to focus on this year's campaign, rather than switch their full attention to 2009.

"I'm not seeing any reason why we shouldn't develop to the end. But in the end you should ask not myself, but someone who is designing it," he said.

"I think the team are trying to do the maximum for this year's car, and trying to also design and work hard on next year's car."
